Choosing the Right Size for Your Dog
We learned most of this the hard way, with three very different dogs at three very different bowls. Find the group that matches yours.
Toy & Small Breeds
Chihuahuas, Yorkies, and other small breeds generally do best with a shallow bowl, roughly 1–2 cup capacity and under 2 inches deep, so they aren’t pressing their throat against the rim to reach food at the bottom.
Medium Breeds
Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, and similar breeds typically eat one to two cups per meal and do well with a roughly 4-cup bowl around 6–7 inches in diameter, giving room to shift kibble around without spilling it over the edge.
Large & Giant Breeds
Labradors, Shepherds, and giant breeds need real volume and a wide, stable base. This is where a weighted base or use of a silicone bowl in combination with a silicone mat helps bring added stability to their bowls.
Flat-Faced Breeds
Pugs, French Bulldogs, and other brachycephalic breeds do best with a wide, shallow bowl. A deep or narrow bowl makes it physically harder for a short muzzle to reach food and can worsen the breathing difficulty many flat-faced dogs already have.

A little everyday care keeps your dog’s food bowl fresh and ready for the next meal. We recommend a quick daily wash with warm, soapy water. For any food that has dried on, simply soak the bowl in hot water for a minute or two to help loosen the residue, then wash and rinse clean. Houndstone silicone dog bowls are also dishwasher and microwave safe for easy everyday care. Silicone is durable, but it is not designed to be a chew toy. If your dog occasionally gets a little curious with their teeth, simply give the bowl a quick look from time to time and discontinue use if you notice significant chewing, tearing, or loose areas.
